The Edina Police Department sent a contingent of motorcycle officers to Washington, D.C. for National Police Week, an annual series of events that grew out of Peace Officers Memorial Day, first designated by President John F. Kennedy in 1962. The trip was supported by local community organizations including the Edina Crime Prevention Fund and the Edina Citizens Academy.

The journey held particular significance this year as officers paid tribute to fallen law enforcement personnel from the Twin Cities region. The group honored Officer Jamal Mitchell of the Minneapolis Police Department, as well as Officers Matthew Rugie and Paul Elmstrand and Paramedic Adam Finsath of the Burnsville Police Department, all of whom died in recent years. Edina officers were among the few motorcycle police units in the Twin Cities region selected to participate in the national event.

The Minnesota contingent included officers from Edina, the University of Minnesota Police Department, and the Egan Police Department. They joined motorcycle officers from across the country, including departments from California, New Mexico, and Miami, Florida. During the trip, Edina officers participated in events including a candlelight vigil and provided direct support to the families of fallen officers, fostering camaraderie and demonstrating solidarity among law enforcement agencies nationwide.

National Police Week serves as an important reminder of the contributions and sacrifices made by law enforcement personnel across the country. The Edina Police Department's participation underscores the city's commitment to honoring those who have given their lives in service to their communities.
