The city's Public Works Department finished a comprehensive inventory of water service lines required by the federal Environmental Protection Agency. The good news: no lead service lines were found in Edina. The work did identify two galvanized pipes that need replacement and 96 previously unknown lines that have since been evaluated. The city will cover the cost of replacing the two galvanized lines and will notify the affected property owners.

In a separate initiative, Edina is pursuing $200,000 in federal funding to support a $250,000 Railroad Crossing Safety Action Plan. The plan would study and improve seven railroad crossings within the city to enhance safety and potentially establish "quiet zones" where train horns are not required. The effort comes as residents have complained about increased nighttime train operations and associated horn noise. The process is complex and will require approval from the Federal Railroad Administration, making it a multi-year undertaking.

On a more celebratory note, the council held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new tactical training building at the South Metro Public Safety Training Facility on Brar Boulevard. The 6,524-square-foot facility is a collaborative project involving Edina, Bloomington, Eden Prairie, and the Metropolitan Airports Commission. Designed with an L-shaped layout, the building will allow law enforcement officers to train for various scenarios using simulated firearms. Construction is expected to be completed this winter.

The council also provided information about the upcoming general election on November 5th. Early voting is available at Edina City Hall with extended hours on November 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, ahead of Election Day voting at designated polling locations.
