Council members and speakers reflected on Iola's transformative impact on Edina hockey and the broader community during the memorial tribute. Before coaching, Iola earned an Olympic silver medal as a goalie for the U.S. hockey team. He went on to lead Edina High School's program from 1958 to 1991, a tenure that included the school's first state championship in 1969.

Speakers credited Iola with creating Edina's hockey identity from the ground up. "Edina Hockey didn't exist really," one speaker recalled. "He created the success, and what I love about it, he did it with an Iron Range feel of hard work and discipline." Former players described his coaching philosophy as relentlessly positive, with one noting he was "the most positive guy I've ever met."

The tribute also highlighted the role of Braemar Arena, constructed in 1965-1966, in the program's rise. The indoor facility gave Edina a competitive edge at a time when even Minneapolis lacked similar infrastructure. "We won the first title in '69 and without Braemar I don't think that would have been possible," one alumni speaker said. A statue of Iola now stands at the arena.

Iola's influence extended beyond wins and championships. Speakers emphasized his lasting presence in the community, where he remained a fixture at Braemar Arena and was known for his signature fedora. "These little kids know the name Ike and they know the Fedora, and it's just going to be carried on," one community member said.

The Edina Hornets hockey team honored Iola during a game the evening of the retreat by placing his fedora on the bench. No formal votes were taken during the tribute portion of the meeting.
