Edina Closes Highway 100 On-Ramp for Construction

Meeting date: Jul 22, 2025
Published Aug 5, 2025

The on-ramp from 50th Street to northbound Highway 100 in Edina will close for several months beginning July 31, according to a city construction update. The closure will remain in effect until late fall 2025 to allow contractors to complete major infrastructure improvements at the Vernon Avenue interchange.

Chad Milner, Edina city engineer, said the closure will enable construction of a noise wall extending from Minnehaha Creek to 50th Street, installation of a new signal system, and construction of the replacement on-ramp. The work is part of the ongoing Vernon Avenue and Highway 100 interchange reconstruction project.

Drivers will have two detour options during the closure. A local detour directs traffic to Benton Avenue using frontage roads, while the signed detour routes drivers to Eden Avenue, then south on Highway 100 to the Highway 62 interchange, east on Highway 62, and back north on Highway 100 to Grrange Road or points north.

Milner emphasized the need for driver courtesy toward pedestrians and cyclists in the construction area. He said the city has observed drivers failing to yield to pedestrians at crosswalks and roundabouts throughout the district.

The city plans to reopen the on-ramp as soon as construction is complete. Additional project information and updates are available at bettertogetherina.org.

The city engineer provided details on upcoming closures related to the interchange project, specifically the 50th Street on-ramp to northbound Highway 100. This closure, lasting several months, facilitates the construction of a noise wall, a new on-ramp, and a signal system. Comprehensive detour routes were outlined, including both local and signed options. The speaker also addressed traffic safety and courtesy, noting issues with yielding to pedestrians and managing traffic flow around roundabouts, emphasizing cooperative driving for a safer travel experience.

This will allow the contractor to build a noise wall from Minhaha Creek up to 50th Street. It'll allow them to build the new on-ramp and install the new signal system in that location.

We also ask that you be courteous to pedestrians and cyclists within the district. We're seeing a lack of yielding to pedestrians using crosswalks midblock and crosswalks around the roundabouts.

[0:01] We have a Vernon Avenue and Highway 100

[0:03] interchange project update for you. My

[0:06] name is Chad Milner and I'm the city

[0:07] engineer for the city of Adina. So,

[0:10] coming soon, the on-ramp from 50th

[0:13] Street to northbound Highway 100 will be

[0:16] closed. That work will close that

[0:18] intersection for a few months until late

[0:21] fall. This will allow the contractor to

[0:23] build a noise wall from Minhaha Creek up

[0:26] to 50th Street. It'll allow them to

[0:28] build the new on-ramp and install the

[0:31] new signal system in that location. Once

[0:34] that work's complete, we will try to

[0:36] open that ramp as soon as possible to

[0:38] allow that access. The detours, there's

[0:40] a local detour down to Benton Avenue if

[0:42] you use the local frontage roads. The

[0:45] sign detour is having you take Eden

[0:47] Avenue and entering southbound Highway

[0:49] 100, going down to the interchange with

[0:52] Highway 62, taking the eastbound Highway

[0:55] 62 exit, and then immediately taking the

[0:58] northbound Highway 100 exit to exit back

[1:02] up to Graange Road or continuing north

[1:06] on northbound Highway 100. We also ask

[1:09] that you be courteous to pedestrians and

[1:11] cyclists within the district. We're

[1:13] seeing a lack of yielding to pedestrians

[1:15] using crosswalks midblock and crosswalks

[1:18] around the roundabouts. So, please be

[1:19] courteous of those pedestrians and be

[1:22] courteous to fellow drivers when they're

[1:24] trying to enter and exit the

[1:25] roundabouts. If you see a long traffic

[1:27] queue, please allow them to enter. And

[1:30] if everybody works together, it'll be a

[1:32] safe and convenient travel through the

[1:34] district. For more information, please

[1:36] visit betterto togetherina.org

[1:39] for project updates, maps, and other

[1:41] information. Thank you.
