Brooklyn Park Schools Intensify Focus on Equity with 'Continuous Improvement Magnifier'
District leaders and educators are employing a targeted framework to analyze and rectify disparities in student outcomes, with a spotlight on Black students receiving special education services.
Brooklyn Park, MN – Brooklyn Park School District leaders and board members recently convened for a work session to scrutinize the effectiveness of their "Continuous Improvement Magnifier," a strategic framework designed to meticulously analyze and rectify disparities within the school system. This initiative highlights the district's unwavering commitment to fostering equitable outcomes for all students, particularly those from historically underserved communities. The discussions, held at the Educational Service Center, underscored efforts to align strategic directions with actionable measures, driving targeted improvements across various school sites.
During the session, district officials and school leaders shared concrete examples of the Magnifier in action. Kari Sawyer, Early Childhood and Family Education Coordinator, offered insights into its application within early learning settings, emphasizing its role in fostering foundational equity from a young age. A key presentation focused on Northview Middle School's intensive efforts to address specific disparities.
Our transformational cycle was grounded in the idea of being focused on the disproportionality in student outcomes for students who identify as Black and receive special education services.
Northview Middle School's comprehensive approach included a series of empathy interviews, meticulously designed to gain firsthand perspectives directly from students. These interviews formed a critical part of the 'street data' methodology, moving beyond traditional metrics to understand the nuanced experiences and challenges faced by students.
