Brooklyn Park School Board Advances Key Strategic Directions for Student Equity
Council members reviewed detailed data and plans for Strategic Directions A and B, focusing on continuous improvement and addressing disparities in student outcomes during a recent work session.
The Brooklyn Park City Council, convening for a work session on Tuesday, June 9th, 2026, delved into the specifics of "Strategic Directions A and B," a crucial component of the district’s ongoing commitment to enhancing student outcomes and fostering equity. The session featured a comprehensive presentation on Vision Cards A and B data, outlining the strategic alignment of priorities, strategies, and measures designed to guide the district's continuous improvement efforts.
The discussion, led by Dr. Dass, Sunny Burken, Director of Student Services, and Dr. Michael Walker, Director of Educational Equity, highlighted the intentional framework underpinning these directions. The team detailed how Strategic Directions A and B are central to weaving together the district's overarching vision with actionable steps and measurable results. This strategic review is a fundamental step in ensuring all district initiatives are cohesively working towards shared goals.
Focus on Equity Transformation
A significant emphasis was placed on the "Equity Transformation Cycle," a year-long process designed to deepen leaders' understanding and application of equity principles across the district. Dr. Michael Walker elaborated on this cyclical approach, which involves sustained engagement and learning among participants.
As we think about the year-long process, we kind of met in August, November, February, and then in May, allowing for sustained engagement and learning.
This systematic engagement, including the use of a "street data" methodology that prioritizes listening to student and family voices, aims to uncover and address systemic inequities. The goal is to move beyond broad data points to understand the lived experiences of students and apply that understanding to strategic planning and intervention.
