Legislative Session Leaves Mixed Bag for Local Schools, Funding Uncertainties Loom
A recent work session for district officials revealed the complexities of the past legislative session, with significant concerns over special education funding and school safety aid amidst some positive developments.
Brooklyn Park school officials gathered for a work session on Tuesday, June 9th, 2026, at the Educational Service Center to review the outcomes of the latest legislative session, facing a landscape marked by fragmented budget bills and ongoing funding uncertainties. The district's lobbyist, Valerie Dosland, presented a comprehensive update, highlighting both legislative successes and significant challenges that will impact local schools.
And to be honest, it was quite hard to track. I don't know how anyone from the public would have followed along.
Dosland emphasized the unusual nature of the session's budgeting process. "So the supplemental um so there wasn't one education budget bill like we're used to. There was uh many different bills and provisions put in different pots here and there," she explained, underscoring the difficulty in navigating the complex legislative landscape. A pressing concern is the potential for a substantial $250 million cut to special education funding statewide, contingent on a blue-ribbon commission's ability to identify savings by October 1st.
The weight of a $250 million cut weighs on everyone really heavily. So we're watching that closely. They have to have a report due to the legislature by October 1st. The legislature has to act on those recommendations. And if they don't, then that $250 million will be cut.
This potential cut looms large despite a House Education Finance Committee bill attempting to repeal the budget reduction, which ultimately did not advance further. Officials are closely monitoring this situation, as it could have severe implications for special education services.
